Col MILES K. HARKEY

Colonel Miles K. Harkey is Vice Commander 145th Airlift Wing, North Carolina Air National Guard, Charlotte, North Carolina. He assists the Commander with the formulation, presentation and execution of an allocated multi-million-dollar budget involving several major force elements and state funds. Through subordinate commanders, he assists in the planning organization, direction and control of the flying mission, maintenance and protection of assigned C-17 aircraft along with acquisition, construction and maintenance of real property. He is responsible for the recruitment, training, supply and care of assigned personnel.  Prior to assuming his current position, Colonel Harkey served as the Commander of the 145th Operations Group, North Carolina Air National Guard. 

Colonel Harkey earned his commission in 1992 through the Air National Guard’s Academy of Military Science program at McGhee-Tyson Professional Military Education Center. He served for two years in the Reserve Officer Training Corps program while pursuing his Masters and Doctorate at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and North Carolina State University prior to joining the North Carolina Air National Guard in 1993. After completion of pilot training, Colonel Harkey served as a C-130H3 Instructor and Evaluator Pilot, Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System Instructor Pilot, Air Force Advanced Instrument Instructor, Chief of Aircrew Training, Chief of Standardization and Evaluation, Wing Executive-Plans Officer, Chief of Weapons and Tactics, Chief of Current Operations and Wing Chief Pilot. He is a command pilot with more than 5,800 flying hours. Colonel Harkey has significant combat operations and leadership experience gained from serving in many overseas deployments including Operations Joint Forge (Enterprise), Coronet Oak, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
